KĪ-O-RAHI KI ŌTEPOTI
Kī-o-Rahi ki Ōtepoti is a kaupapa that brings together kura from across the rohe to celebrate te ao Māori and kōrero tuku iho through sport, connection, and community.
At its heart, this event provides an opportunity for rangatahi to step into a shared space where mātauranga Māori is lived and experienced in a practical, engaging way. Through participation, students are able to connect with pūrākau, tikanga, and kōrero that sit at the foundation of the game, while also strengthening relationships between kura across the rohe.
This kaupapa creates an environment where rangatahi can learn the game of Kī-o-Rahi, develop their skills, and challenge themselves at a level that suits their experience. Whether they are encountering the game for the first time or already confident players, there is space for everyone to participate meaningfully, contribute to their team, and grow at their own pace.
It is fast-paced, energetic, and inclusive, encouraging teamwork, communication, and respect both on and off the field. The game itself naturally fosters strategic thinking, resilience, and collaboration, while also giving rangatahi the chance to express themselves physically and culturally in a supportive setting.
Beyond the competition, Kī-o-Rahi ki Ōtepoti is about connection. Connecting students to each other, to their kura, and to te ao Māori in a way that is active and memorable. Through shared experience, ākonga leave with new skills and knowledge of the game.
Kī-o-Rahi is a traditional Māori game that combines elements of teamwork, speed, strategy, and ball skills. It is based on the pūrākau (story) of Rahi and Tīrakura and reflects important aspects of te ao Māori, including storytelling, whakapapa, and connection to place.
The game is structured around continuous movement and shifting roles, meaning players need to stay aware of both attack and defence at all times. Success depends on communication, timing, and the ability to read the game as it develops, rather than relying on individual effort alone.
Kī-o-Rahi is fast-paced and dynamic, requiring players to think quickly, make decisions under pressure, and adapt to changing situations on the field. It encourages a balance of physical ability and tactical awareness, where running, passing, dodging, and aiming all play an important role. At the same time, it builds teamwork and coordination, as players must work closely together to achieve shared goals and respond effectively as a unit.
